Landscaping calculators

Gravel, pea gravel, topsoil, and cubic yards.

Pick the gravel calculator for driveways, bases, and angular stone sold by the ton or the yard. Use the pea gravel calculator for round decorative stone on walks and sitting pads; it starts at a lighter 1.25 tons per cubic yard. Use the topsoil calculator for lawns and beds when you care about depth in inches and bag versus bulk. Use the cubic yard calculator when you already think in yards, a hole, or a mixed material and only need volume until you pick a density.

Landscape yards in the US quote bulk stone and soil by the cubic yard or the ton. A yard is 27 cubic feet. Bags at home centers are usually 0.5 cubic foot for stone and 0.75 cubic foot for soil. One cubic yard is 54 bags of 0.5 cubic foot. Pickup beds are not a yard; a half-ton truck often holds about 0.5 to 1 yard of wet material.

Common mistakes: entering depth in feet when you meant inches; mixing pea gravel density with crushed gravel; paying by the yard but staring at the tons line (density changes tons, not cubic yards); treating two filled pickup loads as two cubic yards. Measure length and width in feet, keep depth in inches unless the hole is deep, then order the yards (and tons, if the ticket is by weight) the calculator shows.
